Our Story

Welcome to Butterflies Garden Restaurant

Butterflies Garden Restaurant is the brainchild of Duk Deth, a man whose own life journey has inspired him to give back to his community. Growing up in a poor neighborhood in Phnom Penh, Deth faced numerous hardships. A chance encounter at the age of 12 led him to pursue an education and eventually, a career in culinary arts. His passion for cooking was fueled by his past experiences with hunger, and he knew that he would “never be hungry if [he] was in the kitchen cooking.”

A Vision for Change

In 2005, Susan Hagadorn purchased the original Butterflies Restaurant with the vision of providing hospitality training and free education to underprivileged village youth. She connected with Duk Deth, who became the head chef and kitchen trainer for the new Butterflies Garden Restaurant. Together, they created a thriving business that not only offered delicious food but also provided valuable skills and education to the staff.

Paying It Forward

When Hagadorn decided to retire, Deth stepped up and purchased the restaurant using his own money. Since then, he has continued to provide training and paid education to the staff and trainees. Under his guidance, the restaurant maintains high standards for detail, presentation, food safety, service, and quality.

Making a Difference

Deth’s commitment to giving back extends beyond the restaurant. He reaches out to local villages to offer opportunities, supports children who catch and sell butterflies in the garden, and is involved in projects to help feed underprivileged children. His emotional attachment to the restaurant and his community is evident, and his dedication to providing opportunities for others is truly inspiring.
